Letting myself into the shop building tucked behind the house, I held my breath against the stink of fear, pain, and resignation, a mouse-like death angst that roused my wolf to snapping.

I glared at the lean, dark-haired male standing in the middle of the shop. “You brought him here?”

“He can’t be tracked,” Domingo said. “He’s not bonded to Lysander’s pack.”

Naked and hanging in chains from his wrists beneath an equally bare light bulb, Floyd snorted. “Would you bond with that lunatic?”

I stalked closer, peering at him. “Your wolf isn’t powerful enough to hold itself apart from a pack bond.”

Floyd shook lank hair out of his face and peered back at me through one eye; the other was swollen shut. “Anyone with a stronger wolf can command me and I have to obey.” His mouth twisted. “And everyone is stronger than me, but an omega wolf is too tenuous, too ghostly to be part of the link.”

Under the brutal metathesis of lupoviridae, most often only the strongest wolves survived, so I didn’t know enough about omegas to judge the truth of his words. I walked a half circle around him, meeting Domingo’s gaze. The other male shrugged; he obviously didn’t know either, but the fact he’d brought Floyd to the house was proof enough he judged the omega to be no threat.

“If you aren’t bonded to Lysander’s pack,” I asked, “why did you stay?”

“When he’s near, his presence is overwhelming.” Floyd sagged, his head lolling wearily between his shoulders. “Besides, what other choice is there? Without a pack, I’d slowly lose myself. I’d go wolf and never come back.”

That I did know to be the truth. Without some connection to the outside world, the inner call of the beast was too tempting.

I’d resisted it so long myself.

I glanced at Domingo again. “If he can be controlled by the strongest wolf around him, why is he beaten and chained too?”

Floyd tilted his head. “In his defense, I did try to bite him. Even the weakest wolf still has teeth.”

Domingo chuckled—with a rusty edge, but it was definitely a laugh. I’d heard it about as rarely as I’d turned wolf.

Maybe Bettina hadn’t changed since Lysander bit her, but other things had.

To my further shock, Domingo unhooked the chains trussing Floyd. The dusty-haired male slumped to the floor. He crouched on the concrete, his skin shuddering. I tensed. If he shifted and tried to make a break for the door, I’d kill him before he could run back to Lysander and betray our pack.

I wasn’t sure if Domingo was trusting me to watch or Floyd not to run, but he went to the work bench cabinets. He returned with a pair of cargo pants and a flannel shirt that he spread over Floyd’s hunched shoulders.

At the implicit order to remain in his upright shape, Floyd shoved his arms through the sleeve. He quickly fumbled the buttons closed, as if that thin extra skin of checkered wool was more protection than he’d ever been offered.
